<p>Intel's move to scrap its G.Lite chip efforts comes as no surprise to analysts. In fact, G.Lite has been a major fiasco in the market. Several companies, including Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and others, have either scrapped or de-emphasized their respective standalone G.Lite chip line.</p>

Each core can be viewed as a black-box hard IP to be connected at the top level. Specific signals can easily be assigned connection locations for subsequent wiring when configuring the core. The actual number of I/O connections is in the thousands, but varies depending on the number of interconnect layers available.

Components were acquired on a just-in-time delivery basis, with only enough inventory accumulated to handle work in progress, said Martin Russell, Dataquest analyst. The PC unit told analysts that PC sales accounted for $202 revenue in the quarter, and accounted for $159 million of the firm's net loss.

The net hosting operations had $14.7 million in revenue and accounted for $9.7 million net loss. The one profitable portion of Micron Electronics, the SpecTek DRAM repair operation, had $97 in revenues and an undisclosed level of profit.

Micron Electronics hit its peak in 1997 when it was one of the first PC companies to jump on the direct sales bandwagon, but concentrating on higher performance computers. In the succeeding PC price bludgeoning of recent years, Micron's market position continued to erode. Dataquest's Russell said the firm was especially hit hard in the market downturn beginning last winter.

Micron Electronics in the last year touched off a bitter DRAM module industry dispute, filing patent violation charges against a number of suppliers. Micron holds a patent on a write-protect feature for PC66 through PC133 DRAM modules that became part of the JEDEC industry standard.

After Micron filed its suits, JEDEC has taken steps to eliminate the write-protect part of its DRAM module standard. Vendors also said they are avoiding the patent issue with Micron by simply disabling a module pin that controls the EEPROM used in the write-protect feature.

The module makers charged it was ironic that at the very time its PC affiliate was battling the JEDEC DRAM standard, its parent Micron Technology was on the other side upholding JEDEC SDRAM standards in its own patent fight with Rambus Inc.

Glasgow-based Intense Photonics has started making prototypes of a 980nm erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) pump laser that has close to double the power output of existing commercial designs.

The company has used its quantum well intermixing (QWI) IC processing technology to make a laser with an output power of close to 500mW. The QWI process allows devices to be fabricated without using the regrowth techniques typically used for this kind of laser.

The Beta version will include both the creator and viewer components of the system, Cooke said.

Caroline O'Donnell, marketing manager at Virtual Component Exchange (VCX; Livingston, Scotland), discussed why VCX has implemented the VSIA VC Transfer Standard and became an Alpha user of the Compliance System. VCX has been a member of VSIA since 1999.

The Compliance System allows companies to compare VCs much easier,” said O'Donnell. The adoption of standards will lead to overall market growth. It's worthwhile in the long term.”

Through its website, VCX strives to handle the business and legal issues associated with the procurement of intellectual property (IP), whereas VSIA is concentrating on the technical issues of using third party IP. O'Donnell said that VCX works to improve VC transaction efficiency, security, and cost. VCX claims that it cuts procurement time in half.

Larry Rosenberg, VSIA technical committee chairman, outlined the successes of VSIA and future challenges and plans. On Monday, the organization announced its VC Attributes Standard, which defines the VSIA-compliant set of attributes to be used by VC users. In January, VSIA released the Taxonomy of Functional Verification for VC Development and Integration (VER 1 1.1).
