An important factor is the risk that, as process geometries shrink, electromigration will begin to turn up more frequently at burn-in. This is where the movement of electrons forces the metal to move and, if it is thin enough, break. It is exacerbated by both temperature and circuit speed.

Joe Hutt, vice-president of engineering of Magma Design Automation, said: Interconnect [is responsible for] 50% of the power. It's probably 80% of the delay. As we look to 90 and 70nm, it is going to be 100% of the reliability problem.

An afternoon panel, moderated by venture capitalist Lucio Lanza, saw financial and industry analysts plus professor Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli of the University of California at Berkeley, discuss how the EDA industry needs to expand to increase its market and keep the favorable attentions of Wall Street.

In an otherwise dreary 2001, the EDA industry launched three of the top five and eight of the top 25 best-performing IPOs across U.S. industry while continuing to grow revenue as other electronics sectors faltered, de Geus said. As a result, the EDA industry has recently garnered unprecedented attention from Wall Street, he said.

Jay Vleeschhouwer, an analyst with Merrill Lynch & Co., said that EDA is now on Wall Street's map, yet is viewed as being different and more complex than other software sectors, such as mechanical CAD (MCAD). EDA has the most complex and rapidly changing technology and design limitation requirements of any design software industry,” said Vleeschhouwer. The pace of technology in sectors like MCAD and aerospace is not as rapid or as radical as EDA — and that is an opportunity for EDA vendors to make a long-term investment case [to Wall Street].”

Vishal Aluja, investment officer at J. & W. Seligman & Co., said his firm — a large institutional investor in EDA stocks — has been pleased with the performance of the EDA sector, especially in 2001. One of the reasons we were able to get a net positive return for our customers last year is because we were investors in EDA,” Aluja said.

The venture capital community too now views the EDA industry in a fair light, according to moderator Lanza, with Lanza TechVentures. A few years ago it would have been hard to find a VC that would admit he invested in an EDA company,” but VCs are giving the industry a fresh look, especially since EDA companies have posted great IPO numbers, Lanza said.
