ZigBee provides a standard spec allowing development of low-cost, low-power wireless sensor nets that work together and can run for more than a year on batteries. It can be deployed by untrained installers, such as consumers, and the network allows for mobile nodes.

The spec sits on top of the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The latter is focused on low-rate personal-area networking, enabling low-power, packet-based, highly secure, large networks that will co-exist with other wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi. This makes it suitable for reliable, low-power, wireless data communications for monitoring and control devices. ZigBee addresses complex network topologies such as mesh networks. A ZigBee network is divided into three layers; layer 1 is the PHY and MAC (IEEE802.15.4), layer 2 is the mesh network and layer 3 the profiles.

The critical point was the publication of the standard. In the wireless sensor network (WSN) market, some proprietary standards might address only parts of what ZigBee addresses.

For example, one focuses on the residential market using 868 or 915 MHz but is not scalable for industrial and commercial applications. ZigBee is broader in addressing 2.4 GHz too, which gives it two advantages–the availability of multiple channels and global availability–a key aspect of ensuring acceptability. Since the global focus is on 2.4 GHz, a manufacturer's products meeting ZigBee should be able to be deployed almost anywhere without having to worry about regional differences.

In addition, only ZigBee allows global interoperability while providing reliable secure solutions for many network requirements, such as complex tree and mesh network topologies configured for applications ranging from hotel emergency lighting systems to forest-fire monitoring systems.

JPEG2000 is the next-generation ISO (International Organization for Standardization) still image and video compression standard. In July 2005 it was adopted by the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) as the format for the storage and distribution of major motion pictures. JPEG2000 addresses several weaknesses inherent in existing video formats by improving visual fidelity at high compression rates, increasing error resiliency inwireless network environments and providing efficient lossy and lossless coding in one single source file.

Richmond, Ind. — Belden CDT Electronics Division has expanded its Brilliance line of professional video cables with the introduction of the Brilliance RG-6/U Type precision video coaxial cable. The 1694F is a super-flexible version of Belden's popular 1694A precision video coax. Both cables use the same connectors, which eliminates the need for additional tooling and connectors for a cost- and labor savings.

Similar to the1694A, the 1694F RG-6/U Type low loss serial digital coaxial cable delivers quality analog and digital signal transmissions.
