<p style= San Jose, Calif. — The OneC-AMR GSM/GPRS baseband IC is aimed at emerging 2.5G wireless handset designs. The baseband IC includes the adaptive multi-rate (AMR) codec and can support the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM bands. It is also equipped with an FM synthesizer for melody generation. The baseband IC is available in a set of 180-ball TFPBGA/LFBGA packages with different sizes.

The power-logic shift register features typical on-resistance of 4 ohms to conserve energy, and spike-suppressing 33-V output-voltage clamps that are rated to absorb avalanche energy of 30 millijoules in withstanding inductive loads. The device can also withstand ESD spikes of up to 1.5 kV (human-body model) and 200 V (machine model).

I should point out that, while it is a research project, the appara-tus required for this is relatively compact and robust. For the next few years, it is probably going to find best application as a research tool to iron out defects and so on before full-scale production begins.”

The team has patented the work but no industrial partners are involved at this stage.

According to Dr Dholakia, the next step is to develop more elaborate and extended 3D structures using many tens or even hundreds of particles. The team will then study techniques for introducing defect sites into crystals.

Westwood, Mass. — The UltraLinq MIB access broker (MAB) and UltraLinq command line interface (CLI) software packages have been added to the UltraLinq high-availability software family. UltraLinq MAB is a carrier-class that allows easy MIB object identification in distributed systems across multiple processors. Using this package, designers can track MIB objects that enter, exit, or move in a system. The UltraLinq CLI software is targeted at distributed embedded systems. When used in conjunction with the MAB package, this software provides command line management in communication designs.

S emiconductor alliances have been around for along time. But recently it seems like the high cost of research and development, as well as expensive, next-generations fabs, has resulted in a barrage of alliance announcements. The hope is that an alliance will facilitate faster product introductions, accelerate development of future technologies, share risks, and lower costs. Of course, each alliance member enters the partnership with the expectation of a win/win” relationship.

The gas-propagation system made by Alpha Sciences is able to test multiple wafers in a toaster-like system, said president Mike Tucker. The Inovatia system would be able to test much larger quantities of sample materials. Many companies would prefer to reduce the testing time by working with these larger samples, even though this can add to testing costs, Tucker said.

IRoC's testing service

The alpha particles from packaging account for a majority of SERs at sea level, but cosmic rays account for another source of soft errors. The neutrons from cosmic rays produce ionizing effects that create free electron-hole pairs in silicon.

A suite of services that will perform neutron radiation testing of CMOS ICs on an outsourcing basis will be introduced in the coming week by iRoC Technologies Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.). The bundle of services, called Ser-test, includes simulation software and a programmable test board, based on an FPGA array, which detects neutron-induced errors while a device is bombarded with neutrons.

Eric Dupont, iRoC's president, said the company provides an IP infrastructure” service, using equipment at iRoC's facility, to support semiconductor companies and foundries under time-to-market pressures.
