NEC joined Optical Interconnection Research for Ultra-Fast Computers” in April, 2005. This research is part of the Elementary-Technology Research for Future Supercomputers” project supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The realization of a high-speed and highly reliable VCSEL has been long sought after in the race to develop next-generation supercomputing systems.

A transmission speed of over 20 Gbps will be required for optical interconnection among LSI chips in supercomputers in 2010. The largest issue in current supercomputer performance is the data-transmission speed among LSI chips or boards in comparison to the data processing speed in LSI chips. MANHASSET, N.Y. — In its mid-quarter update, Texas Instruments Inc. said Monday it expected first-quarter 2006 sales of $3.22 to $3.35 billion, compared with the prior range of $3.11 to $3.38 billion.

TI (Dallas) said it expects semiconductor revenue of $3.15 to $3.28 billion, compared with the prior range of $3.05 to $3.30 billion. Educational & Productivity Solutions revenue is slated to be $65 to $75 million, compared with $60 to $80 million projected earlier.

The company expects earnings per share from continuing operations 31 to 33 cents, compared with 29 to 33 cents previously. Both the current and previous ranges for earnings per share include about 4 cents for stock-based compensation expense.
